What is a Melanographer/Dermoscopist
A Melanographer/Dermoscopist is a healthcare professional with specialised training in dermoscopy (the detailed examination of skin using a dermatoscope). Their role is to support the early detection and management of skin cancers.
They work closely with doctors to provide skin checks and educate patients on skin health and skin cancer prevention, helping deliver faster, more accessible skin cancer care in the community. Early Detection Saves Lives!
What Services do Melanographers Provide?
Melanographers are trained to:
- Conduct full-body skin checks and spot checks on all skin types.
- Use a device called a dermatoscope or sophisticated imaging technology to examine moles and lesions in detail. These devices magnify the lesions/moles up to 50x so that the melanographer/dermoscopist can easily recognise a suspicious lesion by pattern recognition.
- Take dermal images of suspicious spots requiring urgent attention and/or follow up monitoring.
- Perform Total Body Photography comparisons for patients with more than 40 moles or a history of Melanoma and repetitive skin cancers.
If they detect something unusual, patients are promptly referred to a doctor for further review and, if necessary, biopsy or treatment.
Training and Qualifications
Melanographers/Dermoscopists are highly skilled practitioners who must meet strict qualifications:
- Completion of a Professional Diploma in Dermoscopy through a University or an accredited Skin Cancer training organisation.
- Experienced and trained in Dermal Therapies.
- An intensive 12-week skin lesion training program.
This training ensures they can reliably support doctors in identifying potential skin cancers.
Should I see a Melanographer or a Doctor?
The choice is yours. Many patients find a Melanographer appointment convenient, especially if:
- You are concerned with a single new spot or any changes to you skin and cannot get an early appointment with your doctor.
- You have had a skin check at a clinic and not satisfied that the check was thorough.
- You would like an appointment before your regular doctor becomes available.
If a skin cancer is identified, a doctor will take over your care for biopsy, diagnosis and treatment.
Fees and Rebates
- A skin check with a Melanographer costs the same as with a doctor.
- As the service is not eligible for a Medicare rebate, you only pay the gap fee — which is the same regardless of whether you see a Melanographer or a doctor.
