Fungal Infections: What are these White Patches on the Back?

White or pale patches on the back can sometimes be caused by a common fungal/yeast infection called tinea (pityriasis) versicolor. It occurs when Malassezia, a yeast that normally lives on the skin, grows excessively. It is more common in warm, humid weather and may cause pale or darker patches with fine scaling and occasional mild itching.

Treatment usually involves an antifungal cream, lotion, or medicated wash. A pharmacist or doctor can recommend the appropriate product and how to use it. The infection may clear before the skin colour returns to normal, so the patches can remain visible for weeks or months.

However, not all white patches are fungal. Conditions such as vitiligo, eczema, or other skin disorders can look similar. If the patches are spreading, completely smooth and sharply white, painful, or not improving with antifungal treatment, see a skin health care professional for a proper diagnosis.

Keeping the skin cool and dry and showering after heavy sweating may also help reduce recurrences.
