Skin cancer rates in Australia are very high — where two in three Australians will be diagnosed with it in their lifetime. With new report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) that around half a million Australians each year have at least one common non-melanoma skin cancer removed.1 Some people are aware of the warnings signs, some are not. While melanoma is often recognised as a changing mole, Merkel Cell Carcinoma (MCC) can appear very differently.
Melanoma
▪ Often starts in pigment-producing cells (melanocytes)
▪ May appear as a new or changing mole
▪ Common warning signs include changes in size, shape, colour, or border
Merkel Cell Carcinoma
▪ Develops from Merkel cells, which help us sense touch
▪ Typically appears as a firm, painless lump
▪ Often red, pink, or purple in colour
▪ Can grow rapidly over weeks or months
